"Mapping the Universe" Project receives national
recognition
The W.J. Denver Pioneers received the
prestigious TelecomPioneers Project Excellence Award for its
"Mapping the Universe - A Solar System" project
at the 78th
Annual Meeting of the International TelecomPioneers in San
Antonio, Texas, January 21-22, 2005.
Five Verizon TelecomPioneer chapters took home six Project
Excellence Awards. These projects were funded through Verizon
grants.
The "Mapping the Universe" project provides an
educational aid for Astronomy teachers and students in grades three
through five, for which the solar system is part of the curriculum. Over
the past seven years, W.J. Denver Pioneers have painted 42 maps on
playground macadams. Measuring 15' x 20', the maps consist of nine
planets, many moons and an asteroid belt. More than 8,000 students have
benefited from this effort. It's W.J. Denver's goal to have a solar system
map next to every U.S. Pioneer map on every playground in the Verizon
territory. For more information, contact Diane Rodger at
