Volunteer Incentive Program (VIP)
Do you volunteer for the PTA? Tutor children or
adults? Coach soccer? Raise money for community organizations?
The Volunteer Incentive Program recognizes employees'
contribution of time and talent to nonprofit organizations. Under the
program, employees are eligible to apply for a grant on behalf of the
qualified organization where they volunteered 50 hours or more during
the year. The Foundation rewards these employee volunteers with a $750
check for presentation to the designated organization. Employees may
request VIP grants on behalf of two separate organizations for a total
of $1,500 each year.

Children's
Sneaker drive to benefit the Woonsocket School Department -
The Denver Chapter of Verizon Pioneers have been a driving
force in our communities for almost 100 years. We see a need
and then find a way to help create a better life for the citizens in over
250 communities we serve in Massachusetts and Rhode Island. Our funding
comes from all different sources but mostly from member donations to
support projects like the one outlined in this article. The need we are
highlighting is for the children attending school in Woonsocket. Over 90%
of the children in the school we are targeting are on subsidized meal
plans, meaning their home income is at, or below, poverty level. During
last winter’s coat drive distribution, it became apparent that their feet
were in need as well. Many of the children clearly had on shoes that were
from older siblings or wrapped in duct tape to keep the soles on.
It is our desire to make sure these very
needy children have sneakers this summer. Not ones with holes, or too big
or have to be kept together with duct tape. Our goal is to raise $1000+
from donations you and others like yourself may be able to give. We could
certainly make an impact on the lives of these children as they finish the
school year and head off to enjoy their summer. Please
help us make this project a reality for the children of the Woonsocket
school system. Click here
or on the pair of sneakers to make an online donation over a secure
connection. If you would like to mail a check, please make it out to
TP Denver Chapter and mail to Verizon Pioneers, 234 Washington St.,
Providence, RI 02903-3202 (please put Children's Sneakers in the memo
section of your check).

March
Smartness - On
March 6, 2009, Verizon Pioneer Volunteers came together at the Rhode
Island State House to participate in the March Smartness Competition for
the 3rd
year in a row. This consumer and
tech savvy competition provides an opportunity for High School students
from the Rhode Island area to compete for the title of State Champions and
move on to the National round of competition being held in St. Louis, MO
over the Spring break. Project leaders Carol Baker of the
Providence Club and Jim Crosbie of the Central Mass Club coordinated the
volunteers and refreshments for the day. Carol, Marion Ward of
the Woonsocket Club, Jim and his partner Jean, Diane Rodger, Chapter
Member at Large and Denver Chapter President, Deb Foley all
volunteered to participate in the day’s events. The Pioneer group of
volunteers acted as Judges, Time Keeper and Question Master.

It was a wonderful opportunity to see education in
action and see the students have fun at the same time. Each
student received a certificate and a few words from Secretary of State
Ralph Mollis and General Treasurer Frank Caprio. Pioneers hope
to generate interest from more schools in 2010 by communicating
information about the program. Eight
local High Schools participated in the 2009 competition. The 2009 winner
was North Providence High School for the 3rd
year in a row. Jim and Jean
delivered the remaining trays of sandwiches and food items to Jeremiah’s
Inn, a shelter in Worcester, and Carol delivered four large containers of
leftover juice to the Women’s Center of Rhode Island. Both
agencies were most appreciative of the donation. |
